Standard Rules

AviationKnowledge uses hyperlinks both for providing further information to the reader and for referencing purposes. In any case, you should exercise good decision making regarding which links to create.

In principle, links should be reduced to a minimum, especially within the main text (see rule). The main exception to this are links used as references (e.g. with videos and images).

Wikidot's editor

The foolproof way of creating internet links is to use the URL link wizard, which prompts you to write the URL of the page you want to link to, the description or anchor-text you want to use in your page, as well as the option to open that internet page in a new window or tab in your browser. This wizard works equally well for external pages as for pages in your wiki. Although http:// appears as default in the URL box, you can substitute it for https:// or ftp://, as required.

Another way is to click on the button URL link, which will insert a default syntax for creating internet links (again, it works equally well for external pages as for pages in your wiki). You will see something very similar to the code below, except that the words "describe link" appear self-selected:

[http://www.example.com describe link]

This code allows you to specify the web address of the page you want to link to (including https://, ftp://, etc. It also allows you to write the description (or anchor-text) that you see fit.

For example,

[http://aviationknowledge.wikidot.com AviationKnowledge]

This code links to the start page of AviationKnowledge, but only the work "AviationKnowledge" will appear on the screen, reducing clutter.

Wikidot's editor also allows you to use a wizard or code for creating internal links (i.e. to other pages in the wiki). However, it is simpler to use the code described above (if only because you don't need to remember two ways of coding but just the one!).

Syntax

Anchored internet links

Providing a description or anchor-text reduces clutter and helps tailor the anchor-text to the surrounding text (i.e. different descriptions can be used to open the same webpage). To provide a description or anchor text, you use squared parenthesis ("[…]") as code block, and write the target web address followed by the anchor-text separated by a space.

For example,

• Open AviationKnowledge [http://aviationknowledge.wikidot.com here]

These three code syntaxis open the same webpage.

Raw internet links

Writing the target web address of the page you want to link to will create a basic link in your page. However, this way of linking increases text cluttering, and should be avoided, as far as practicable.

For example,

http://aviationknowledge.wikidot.com

This link will appear as typed.

Opening links in new browser windows or tabs

If you want the link to open the target webpage in a new window or tab, type an asterisk ("*") right before http://. Links in AviationKnowledge should open external webpages in new windows or tabs. Pages within the wiki should normally open in the same window or tab.

For example,

These two syntaxis open AviationKnowledge start page in a new browser's window or tab.
