Aviation Pollution

A) Air Pollution
It is assumed that aviation industry contributes lots of dangerous chemical to the air. It is true. However, compared to other industries, these dangerous chemicals are only 3.5% of the world’s scale (Australian Academic of Science, 2009). Unlike car industries that have much new technological advancement to limit their emissions, in the aviation industry, such technology is still hard to find. For instance, it has been taking years for the industry to come up with Bio-solar jet fuel; however, the implementation of this technology is still minimum, as costs are the biggest concern in this matter. The graph below shows the increasing air pollution in the UK (as an example only)

B) De-icing Chemical Pollution
The substance used to de-ice aircraft normally includes ethylene as well as propylene glycol (areco, n.d.). These substances are dangerous to the environment. As most airports do not have the facilities to recycle these substances, the surrounding environment is at risk. These chemicals are also potential to kill animals, such as fish.

C) Water Pollution
Water is highly vulnerable at airports where maintenance is not being carried out properly. For instance, when there is a leak on their fuel pipe, this could affect the water for the surrounding environment. During airport expansions, many tend to discharge pollutants to passable water source. This is illegal, however, there only a few legal processes that ever been taken to tackle this issues.

D) Airport Pollution
Not only does air pollution come from the moving aircraft, but it also comes from the traffic on the ground. It is predicted that the ground traffic that coming in and out to airports (buses, taxis, trains, cars) are actually producing more pollution than the aircraft.

E) Noise Pollution
The reason why airports should be located far from the residential areas is to minimise the noise problems. However, there are still many airports located close to residential areas. Most of the noise pollution comes during takeoff and landing. The continuous noise pollution from airports could lead to the residents’ hearing problems, sleep disturbance and decreased performance (Wikipedia, 2009). As the passenger number goes up, so does the noise pollution. See the graph below to see as the number of complaints goes up as the movement of air trafiic also goes up (during peak season).
