Egypt Air 990

Synopsis

On 31st October, 1999. Egypt Air Flight 990, a Boeing 767- 366 ER was flying from Los Angeles to Cairo via New York. Many of the passengers were American senior citizens who were going to visit Egypt as tourists. After the first offer got took over by one of the relief crews and the Captain was away to the washroom, leaving the relief first officer in the cockpit by himself; the whole aircraft suddenly dive down from 33,000 feet to 16,000 feet causing a free fall sensation, The captain made his way back to the cockpit and pulled the aircraft back up to 24,000 feet. However, the first officer’s response was the opposite of the captain causing the aircraft began the final dive into the Atlantic Ocean. All 203 passengers and 14 crews got killed in this accident.

The main cause of the accident is still undefined. Investigators from NTSB argued that the cause of this accident was the first officer’s inputs when the captain was away. Although there are more valid evidences toward to the NTSB investigation, investigators from Egypt Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) said that it was the mechanical defect in the elevator control system of the accident. However, as viewing the accident as a 3rd party, the conclusion which made by the NTSB is more valid than the conclusion that made by ECAA because no evidences was found in the mechanical failure while the aircraft was operation in the sky.
