China Airlines Flight 611: shattered in seconds by metal fatigue

Synopsis

Flight 611 was a routine China Airlines international flight from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Hong Kong International Airport which disintegrated mid-air over the Taiwan Strait on 25 May 2002. The cause of the explosive decompression was determined to be due to metal fatigue of the aircraft which had arisen over an inadequate repair of the aircraft after an incident in February 1980.
