Aeroméxico flight 498 & Piper 4891 - Mid-air collision

Synopsis

On 31st August, 1986.a Douglas DC 9 had a mid air collision with a Piper PA- 28 above the Los Angles restricted airspace and fallen down from the sky to a township called- Cerritos. The piper aircraft was found on the elementary school playground in the same neighbourhood. The part of the tail of the DC 9 was shattered off and the top fuselage of the piper had gone missing. No one knows what caused to this mid air collision when both aircrafts were flying in the same control zone. A total of 82 people died including all 6 crews and 58 passengers from the DC 9, the pilot and 2 passengers in the PA 28, and 15 residents lived in Cerritos.

The causes of the mid air collision was because the pilot of the PA 28 wasn’t familiar with the geographic location that he was flying through hence he couldn’t identify where he was and having difficulties to recognise that he was in the restricted airspace controlled by the Los Angeles International Airport. Secondly, The Radar from the Airport was out dated causing the ATC didn’t see the PA 28 was in the control zone.
